I've been depressed lately, and I'm trying to get back onto a functioning level. So to that end, I decided to revisit some old sketches and ink them in Illustrator, I love the clean lines that illustrator gives and I really feel it helps my work stand out in a new light that I haven't seen before. That makes me feel less crappy and hopefully will put me back in a more productive mode.
I got married. Had a kid about a year ago. WOW! I'm a dad. It's crazy. but professionally? What have I been doing? Well, teaching and Freelancing! I'm contemplating uploading a showcase of my student's work in the near future but for now, this blog is still my online portfolio.

So as to that, I've made a few changes and rearranged some things!

I added Graphic Design work! Feel free to check it out in the tab above.

Anyway, as to how things will be going along: I'm going to try to update this site on a biweekly basis. Every other Sunday.

I'll be adding more animation soon as well. Including a new demo reel! My new reel will consist of my more recent work that I have done this year.

pay attention to the home page as this will be the place I upload gesture sketches, line art, and random thoughts!

Also, because I've been nagged to death about it, I will upload several tutorials on my workflow.

All will be coming in the very near future. Please look out for it!

The resume is now up to date with my comings and goings on what I have been up to professionally as of late.
I'm currently an adjunct instructor at Westwood college, teaching animation fundamentals at the Northlake campus here in Atlanta Ga.

I also did a quick stint at Floyd County! Studio known for the animated show Archer and Chozen.
Granted, I did the first pass but the retakes and what the end result of some of the shots came to look like was slightly different from what I did. That's to be expected in production.

It's a shame that when I update my pages separately, they don't seem to connect to the home page. Not sure how I'm going to fix this problem, or if I will fix this problem as I might start working on a website for myself.

seems about time...

Oh!!! one more bit of news.. STUDIO MADNIS LLC is officially real!!!! Any Commission or freelance work from here on in will go under this company. I hope to build a bigger clientele by providing production quality animation at a reasonable cost! If you require animation, Contact me so we can work something out. cheers!

Please feel free to check out my online portfolio that is this blog!Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-44351999941409688012014-01-22T23:34:00.001-05:002014-01-22T23:34:47.041-05:00New Animations! You can check out some new animations I posted in the animation tab! Every Wednesday evening, I am going to try to continually post new animations. Feel free to check out and critique!

this looks to be an exciting year, as I decided to finally ramp up this blog with posts showcasing my animation! As you can see above, there is a new tab and page ready for the good stuff!

I'm still debating as to how to showcase my professional work as I feel screen shots just won't do, so as I'm figuring that out, I still need to move forward so I decided to show my personal work! Yes! from tutorials I completed to 11 second club animation I did but didn't submit, to simple random good fun, you'll find them here.

So to bless the occasion, the first post in the animation tab is that of my logo. If you haven't seen it, take a peek! This was something I made during my college days, so it's a pretty early animation for me. hahaha...

More to be posted old and new alike! Please look forward to it!

but here's a direct link to the animation tab:
So, I've been practicing modeling, trying to step up my modeling ability
so I can start working on some personal projects and post em up vs
continuously showing what I did at the studio. If I want to move up, I
feel this is a necessary step. that said, here's a couple of models i'm
working on. With practice, I'll get better and better and actually be
able to capture the essence of the character rather than trying to work
with the front/side/back. to that effect, I've been modeling these
characters without those guides and instead one piece of concept art.
looking at them, I still got a ways to go. So, continuing to tweak as we
go along.

Though those are the primary shows at our studio, we also touch upon other things as well, one such example is a straight to DVD movie that comes out, March 13, 2012.

I present:

In this movie, I worked on a variety of vehicles, not just the Mystery Machine but also other things as well. I also did Background animations as well. Once this officially releases on Blu-ray, I'll add the screen shots of what exactly I did in this movie.

Until the next volume!Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-16766348216841298222011-11-07T10:30:00.005-05:002012-01-24T13:11:51.910-05:00Stuff I worked on vol 2SO! not much time as passed, and this sorta feels like an art dump, BUT WHAT THE HELL! hahaha.. I haven't updated this blog like I should so I guess this is sort of to be expected.
I promise, doodles and illustrations will come back eventually.

as well as more personal animation projects, but that's going to be in time. and more likely when I reactivate my website.. yes. I have a website. it's not up to date, and it's a load of crap at the moment, so in the meanwhile. this blog suits me just fine.

with that, we move onto volume 2. where I present,

scenes I worked on in Family Guy entitled: "Stewie Goes for A Drive"

Before I go onto show my work, I would also like to say, other shows I have worked on such as "The Lebron's", the Past Season of "The Cleveland Show" and the series finale of "Batman: The Brave and The Bold" will be shown in future volumes. Thing is, I have to look for these shows first. The Lebron's don't come on Youtube in Korea (stupid country blocker getting in the way) and finding a decent looking version of Batman is hard to come by... I'll probably end up buying the dvd/bluray just for that.. of course, if I could get my scenes directly from my job that would be a blessing... as it turns out.. so far. no good. it's okay though, right now, I'm happy with just this. hopefully I won't get in trouble for showing stuff that's already aired right?

so without further adieu, onto the scenes!

For Family Guy:

So this first scene was very cool. Why? because I did everything except the character animation here. hahahaha! Yup. The three extra cars, Brian's Prius and the Background including camera work was done by yours truly. The Prius was done on a motion path, while the three cars in the background were done like the scenes in The Cleveland Show premier. This scene was also one of my first pains. because I had to mix match so many separate animations at one time it became something of a chore. the Camera was probably the biggest issue here. the pan to the side was a pain because the Prius was on a curve but it still looked more like it was sliding to the right rather than driving. So i had to adjust both the curve and the camera until they matched. I also had to adjust the background by moving it a little bit so it would have the illusion of being bigger than it actually was. Not to mention other adjustments made to the background in regards to scale, position, etc. In the end though, I was still very happy to have worked on this scene!

the next scene I worked on was Stewie actually crashing into the lamp post. I had a lot of fun just going on youtube and actually looking at crash tests for the Prius, just to see the car crashing in motion. for this scene I made two versions, one with the crushed front, the next without.

this next shot was much like the mobile from the season premier. I had to make these images huge. this is mainly because the camera animations were done by the compositing team unlike the first scene in this post where it was done in XSI.
these three were interchanging flats that were used for these sequence of scenes. If when you're watching this episode and you see these three shots of the cars, they were done by me.

These last two shots are interesting to me in that they were done using a completely different program than what we normally use for Family Guy. Normally, we use XSI Softimage for our 3d Scenes. the toon shader is just better, but for these two scenes, we actually jumped to Maya.
I assume we did this to test out whether or not our scenes would look as good as it does in XSI. does it? you be the judge. I used to be a huge Maya advocate, but continuing to work with XSI, I'm slowly coming around to seeing the benefits of animating in that program. Not to say that Maya doesn't have it's own strengths. it's just XSI seems like I'm less fighting with the software and just digging more into animation where as every once in a while with Maya, I'll find myself a tad frustrated because I feel like the software just wants to be a pain in my ass.

the second picture also shows something that we do as part of the CG team. Sometimes matching a 2d animation and a 3d animation can be a pain. a serious one at that. So if the character isn't moving around as much and they're basically 2d flats they send us the still image to put in the vehicle. less headache for them and just one more thing for us to render. (^ ^)V

so.. that wraps up vol. 2.

stay tuned for more updates! and I'll try to actually stay on top of this blog.Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-32040635307581755242011-11-07T09:37:00.007-05:002012-01-24T13:11:38.116-05:00Stuff I worked on Part 1.So, working at Emation, I've been working on a lot of shows. It's crazy hectic but I'm steadily getting better in my craft. or at least, that's what it feels like... anyway, at emation, I've been working on the CG aspects of these animated tv shows. Mostly that revolves around vehicles; ie cars, helicopters, etc. so there hasn't been much character animation.

that isn't to say I've haven't done any at all... I just can't disclose everything.

that said the purpose of these posts are to show you the scenes I did for the stuff that has already aired:

in part 1; the screenshots of scenes I worked on in The Cleveland Show entitled "BFF's" and Family Guy entitled "Lottery Fever." along with brief descriptions will be provided.

For The Cleveland Show:

the two animations below were very basic animations done in XSI. basically took the cars, pointed them in the direction I wanted them to go, and set the tangents to linear and made the curves gradients. this made the work load easy by simply making it so I don't have to worry about a beginning or ending key. and all that was necessary was just playing with the timing.

this first shot is where Cleveland leaves for Quahog to look for Peter.

the second, the scene where he arrives at Quahog.

For Family Guy:

I had a more active role in regards to animated scenes compared to the Cleveland Show.
again, the work was done in XSI.

The first shot was Peter pulling into his driveway.

The second was Lois pulling into the driveway.

For the first two shots, the biggest challenge for me was the timing of the stops. As these scenes aren't very long in time, the two cars initially pulled into the driveway way too fast. The solution of course, was continually playing with the curves as well as the secondary motion of the car body. The second was matching the perspective. Because it can sometimes be tricky, as the layout almost always never matches the perspective shown in the storyboard. So adjustments
almost always needs to be made.

if you remember my post about GI Joe Renegades, then you would recall my explanation about
"flats". In this scene, the Rolls-Royce was placed within the shot.

this next shot was a very fun one for me, in that there are two things here that I worked on.
not just placing the Rolls-Royce in the scene as well as the Giant Mobile. But also, I had to render this thing out as a HUGE image sequence. This is because the scene initially starts out with a close up on Stewie and Brian and then trucks out to reveal this giant thing in the sky. and it was also fun because of it's simplicity. I just enjoyed working on this scene a lot.

the final scene I worked on in this episode was that little banana yellow car you see driving past. much like The Cleveland Show scenes, this was done in the same manner.

So! that's it for now, stay tuned for Vol 2, coming after this.Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-42021837527296920382011-05-06T11:57:00.000-04:002011-05-06T12:08:12.330-04:00quick update.sorry, won't be showing any work today... still in the prepping stages to be shown. They're video! yay~~~

having said that.. I'm just going to talk about something that's been buggin me as of late. you see..
I work at this studio. and it's very draining. i'm mentally drained by the end of every day and I don't really get in the mood to do my personal stuff.. i'm also filled with stress because of all the work i have to do at the studio + retake shots that come in that compound the work load... so everything I need to do still is on the back of my mind + more stuff continually coming in.. just knowing what's on the horizon really gets the groan out of me...

this brings me to my point... if you're going to work at an animation studio

you need excellent time/management skills. you need to be flexible enough that you can juggle several things at once, and you need to realize.. this will drain you. and you will also be stressed when team leaders start pulling you in several directions at once. that said..

you need a good outlet. the video game outlet is starting to fail me.. i don't have the patience to sit through a video game anymore. watching shows is okay.. but it doesn't really relieve stress... so i recommend something physical. hence..

me starting to get more serious into this P90X thing. yeah i dabbled in it at first. but I think i'm going to take it more seriously, and force myself to actually do this. especially Yoga X... just focusing on the here and now, and forgetting the world for that 1 hour 35 minutes really did wonders for me when i was dabbling with it earlier this year.

so yeah. be on the look out.. videos will be posted soon. with more things to talk about job related wise...

peace everybody!Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-70137847349765653832011-04-24T07:39:00.001-04:002012-01-24T13:11:08.445-05:00a short update...just a couple of things to show first before we get down to business.
a design I made that's far from finished but will represent my header when completed.
I might replace the character with my original madnis mascot...

onto something a bit more interesting... My Job description.

When I tell people I worked on certain shows, ie (Family Guy, Gi Joe, Cleveland Show, The LeBron's, as well as other shows that can't be mentioned yet...) people get excited, thinking I worked on the character animation of the show, this is however untrue. though i have worked on these shows, my job was that of a 3d animator. That said, for the most part, the stuff that I work on in these shows are mainly the 3d aspects of the show. And for these types of shows, thats mainly (but not entirely) about vehicles and complex background animation. I also place 3d objects within the scene. Such as a vehicles or other background elements depending on what the storyboard calls for.

in this post, the following are some screen shots of Gi Joe Renegades, where I did just that. I worked on this show at my previous job place, studioB (no relation to StudioB located in Canada)
where they collaborated with JM animation on this particular show.

disclaimer: Gi Joe Renegades is the property of Hasbro and Darby Prop Productions. The work I did on these shows were when I was employed at StudioB working jointly with JM animation.

These first two images are examples of how I would take a 3d object and place it within the scene. This sort of thing is called "flats". Here the truck being the 3d object is placed within the layout as part of the background. The shots are from episode 5: "The Return of the Arashikage: part 1."
in these shots, taken from Episode 6: "Homecoming: Part 1" are examples of the vehicle animation that I work on in these television shows. In these shots, I animated the truck or if it was also in the storyboards, the automated Drones as well.

Well that about wraps it up for this week!
Tune in the next time as I continue to update with more work that I did at my previous studio. as well as, (if i can find a way to compress it cleanly and beautifully...) my latest demo reel. and of course, more drawn work. both completed illustrations or my favorite stuff.. the wips..

I just decided I would use this blog as more than just a sketch book/art dump and try to use this as a more professional means to display said projects. which is wrong... the original mission for this blog wasn't that at all.

Of course, I am in the process of revamping my own website, to get that up and running again, as well as bringing a certain character that's been my dream project since before college.... and me being the slow/steady type. I'm reworking the story to see how it can go from a childs project to something more mature.

in the meanwhile, I'll try to be better at maintaining this blog as well as my Deviant art *shudder* and use it more as it was originally intended.. an art dump for me to share and receive criticism or praise in order to better myself as an artist.

I promise to try to update this blog and DA on a more bi-weekly schedule and show you all the W.I.P's of my projects whether they're playblasts of animation (non-work related), sketches, stuff I've been touching on photoshop, or other things I've been practicing.

Apologies! For those who've been keeping track of my blog THANK YOU!

on another note, you can see some of the work I've done professionally as an animator
on episodes of the Cleveland Show, GI Joe renegades, and the LeBron's.
as these shows continue to air on Television and the internet, I'll add some details as to what I specifically did on each show.Studio Madnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15901975371675110507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316195467401229827.post-71071586379756395812010-06-24T06:46:00.000-04:002010-06-24T06:52:53.055-04:00my favorite godzilla image ever!

not mine. i wish i knew who did this.. because this picture is
my favorite godzilla image. I'm also going to start revisiting prior wips to get them to finished status so i can print them, and post them up on my wall proudly... and then start on the animations that should go along with it. That's right, I gots stories to tell! anyway, without any more fuss..
Wip #1: Blemish. this is a coloring in progress that i decided to take a drawing from a friend, and color his work. he's been waiting a long time for this one. and now that i'm done with school, it's definitely on the agenda. hope he likes what i got so far...

Wip #2: panda man. A pandaman wearing remixed korean clothing. stuff to do is add a background and tweak the lighting a bits... but yes, this will be worked on as i go.. i might scrap what i have and recolor the guy.. i don't know, i'm not really feelin it.. what do you guys think?

Wip #3: I-tien, one day poster number 2. if you guys look down in the previous posts, you'll see a lone tree within a snowy field. this is one of the characters for this story (animation) that i'm working on. anyway, i'm liking the direction this is goin in so I'm going to keep trucking and pull this one out.

anyway, crits are definitely welcome. and expect to see some animation from me soon as well. it's about time i set up this blog as a proper entry way to my forthcoming website... which will feature completed animations, as well as the content that's set up on this blog. I'm still a growing sapling and even though i'm starting to bud, i look to the sun moon and stars and say dammit i needs to grow faster!
